To blog or to be hired?

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050711-5080.html

This really makes me wonder. While the article talks mostly about blogging and an academic career, I know blogging has gotten many people fired, and chances are they probably prevent quite a number of people from being hired as well. Both my parents really don't like my website as it is as they feel it feels really unprofessional and would pretty much nullify my nice resume.

So, it seems that I should certainly keep this blog anonymous. I never really planned this to be faceless, but rather just on the fact that I used this account to comment for many years without posting anything. I was planning to buy rename token, but it looks like I shouldn't. It also looks like I should hurry up and get the weekdaily feature out of here.

I've been planning on writing a number of technical issues, and I have a request from a friend for an OpenGL article. I feel OpenGL is something I have not seen written about well at all and I feel I could really contribute something to the online mush with one. However, now I'm having second doubts? Should I just keep the website small and make it professional and impersonal? Can I write a lot of tutorials with an impersonal feel, or do I really want to put myself through that strain?

Right. Reasons like this is also why I've stopped using the real-name version of the LJ USER tag and why I prefer people to keep pictures of me (or other identifying information) to, at most, friends-only posts.

Even if all you write is innocuous, best to keep it anonymous.

I guess that's why I've always liked your LJ name.

Professionalism is not mandatory at all times.

You don't have to be professional all the time. A lot of people maintain a "personal" persona and then a "professional" persona. This is particularly true of people working in our industry; they usually have one section of their website which has a lot of fooling around and humor and art, and then they have a more professional 'portfolio' section which is what they present to corporations. Now, corporations really don't mind it if you like to be totally silly and have ridiculous humor so long as you can demonstrate that you are capable of operating in a professional environment as well. In fact, a lot of companies regard people with a healthy sense of creativity and humor to be valuable to the corporate culture, and some foster that internally. One corporation I worked for, There, worked hard to make sure no one took anything too seriously, and the evidence was abound; silly caricatures of employees on the kitchen whiteboards, weekly ping pong tournaments with all sorts of silly pranks going on between employees, and even an almost constant nerf-gun war. One of our storage areas even had an arcade and rock-climbing wall. There were several days where I would do no work at all, and this was completely okay. They would rather people do no work one day, and be completely creative and innovative the next, rather than having people grind around in cubicles in a zombie-state for week after week after week.

Anyway, my point is, in our industry, you can really afford to be silly, and it's more an asset than a liability.

Re: Professionalism is not mandatory at all times.

Well, there's more than just being silly. What about opinions? I suppose I wouldn't really like to work at company where they couldn't appreciate a bit of silliness, but I don't see why I would want to rule myself out from working there.

Anyway, I think I'm going to keep the site fairly professional. All improfessional stuff I can make small sites for that arn't associated with my name, or simply robot.txt them.
